Language through GamesWant a quick, easy way to engage students in practicing grammar, without worksheets. Write some words on paper, create a Thinking Map that organizes the information or utilize a standard game like, Go Fish, Concentration, or Matching; you will have a motivating task for students to practice their grammar skills. In the photo montage, students are learning the different types of nouns; person, place, thing, animal, with a special focus on Abstract Nouns. Students practice categorizing these different types of nouns in a tree map. In addition, students utilize collaborative conversation skills in order to express their ideas, explain their thinking, agree or disagree, and take turns talking. Many groups create sentences, using a variety of sentences, that utilize these words in an interesting way. I always encourage students to Telling Me More! so they can grow their ideas. These groups are differentiated by various language levels; they are flexible groups that change monthly based on reading and CELDT levels.
